Justin has been teaching guitar since May 2005 and has taught hundreds of students privately and at various institutions across Ottawa. He teaches technique, ear training, theory, improvisation, reading, audition preparation, repertoire/songs, and virtually any style of music. Here’s what some of his students have had to say about him.

Justin began his musical endeavours at the age of 12 when he bought his first guitar with his own savings. He began by trying to keep up with his uncles around the campfire playing rock and roll classics. In middle school he started a punk rock band with his friends that evolved into an original skacore band, then eventually into a metal cover band which by the end of high school transformed into an original instrumental metal band. Justin’s fiery passion for music and his mother’s guidance encouraged him to pursue music studies at first with a private instructor and then in university. In 2012, Justin graduated with a Bachelor of Music Degree with high honours distinction from Carleton University. Justin has also studied with David Liebman, Vic Juris, Ken Rosser, Roddy Ellias, Jesse Stewart, Mark Ferguson, Tim Bedner, John Geggie, James Wright, James McGowan, Wayne Eagles, Mike Essoudry, Malcolm Goldstein and Anthony Ridi.

Justin is currently working on his first instructional guitar book. He writes and publishes FREE LESSONS on justinduhaime.com and has written reviews and interviews for the Ottawa Citizen’s jazzblog.ca and for ottawajazzscene.ca including interviews with John Scofield, David Mott, Matt Brubeck, Ellwood Epps, Vic Juris, and reviewed concerts by Ben Monder/Theo Bleckmann, Ari Hoenig Quartet, Big Satan and Marc Ribot.
